Formed within the dusty walls of a storage warehouse for water filters in Annandale, then sculpted across an array of inner-west bedrooms and rehearsal rooms, The Cold Mean Reds are a four-piece no frills rock’n’roll band from Sydney, Australia. Built from the slow-cooked songbook of songwriter and guitarist Sam “Beats” Beattie, the band also features bass player Reg Barber (Firearms, Lomera), vocalist Lachlan Marks (Gay Paris) and drummer Andres Hyde (Sumeru, about 15 million other bands). Their five song EP “Garagem de Moderno” was recorded and produced over six months in the aforementioned bedrooms and rehearsal rooms by Reg, in between trips to the “chippy shop” with his young daughters and countless attempts to get Beats’ vintage Fender Mustang (“Daphne”) to stay in tune for more than three minutes at a damn time. The result is 17 minutes worth of gritty pop songs, doused in oddball melodies and proto-punk riffing.
